When it comes to starting a charity,  it can often be difficult to get it off the ground and make it successful. This is especially true if you are new to the world of nonprofits and philanthropy, as there is a lot that you need to know in order to create a charity that will continue to thrive for years or even decades into the future.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when starting a children's charity is the importance of getting advice from industry experts. We recently caught up with Helen Crowther, one of the leading fundraisers for our latest Local Business Spotlight, the Children's Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT), for her top tips for working in the charity industry.

Keep it simple

Make it as easy as possible for people to donate. Online tools are amazing for this, but always make it as quick and as easy for your donors as possible. Having clear links to Amazon Wishlists or online donation platforms are great. As soon as you make it difficult for your donors, you risk losing them.

Keep it fresh

Never be afraid to try new ideas, even if they don’t work out. If you never try, you’ll never know. You should also never be afraid to revisit ideas that you have done years ago and put a new spin on them.

Always be transparent with your donors

It’s imperative that donors know where their money is going. Always be open, transparent and keep people up to date via your social media or through newsletters to showcase where and how donations are making a difference. People are more likely to give again if they can see the difference their donations are making.

Don’t be afraid to ask

If people don’t know that you need the money, they can’t give it to you in the first place. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that everyone knows you’re a charity or that you need money or supplies. Always ask and always be very clear about what you need and why.

Work together

Many people in the charity industry see each other as competition, and it can feel that way, particularly when it comes to funding. However, charities that learn to work together can be stronger and do more together. Instead of working against a charity similar to yours, try to establish a mutually-beneficial partnership.

If you would like to get involved with the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT) or get in touch for a bit of guidance, you can visit their website. If you would like to make a donation, you can visit their Amazon Wishlist, for an updated list of their much-needed supplies.
