Tips to save costs during a home move

Posted: 20 April 2021

Moving Home

Whether you’re moving across the country or down the road, moving can be an expensive exercise. Luckily, a little bit of planning can go a long way and there are a several ways to save on costs and reduce stress.

Here are a few tips on how to save costs while moving home:

Book movers during the week

Be strategic about when you book your moving company or van hire. Many companies offer cheaper rates to use their services during the week instead of the weekend, and out-of-peak moving season (which falls over the summer in the UK).

Prepare to cancel home-based providers

Many utility providers, such as the internet and cable require a notice period before cancellation. Make sure you reach out to your providers and cancel your subscription in advance so that you don’t end up paying for a month of services that you don’t need.

Recycle packaging

Get creative with packaging supplies. Where possible, use recycled boxes and newspapers to pack your belongings. You can also use linen to wrap your fragile belongings, but it's better to not compromise on the strength of boxes and proper packaging materials so try to strike a balance.

Declutter before the move

Give yourself enough time to pack up your home and declutter your belongings on your own instead of hiring a professional packer. Declutter your belongings and save on the amount of items that need to be moved. You can also sell these unused items for some extra cash, or store items that you want to keep but don’t have space for in your new home.

Plan for the transition period

Depending on how the sale of your current home and the purchase of your new home line up, you may find yourself without a place to stay during the transition time. Make a plan for this period by looking up affordable short-term rentals and getting a storage unit for your belongings.

At Storage King, we offer a variety of different sized units available with a flexible lease agreement, meaning that you only pay for the space you need for as long as you need it. Contact us at 800 0852 954 to find out more, or get a quote online
