Tips To Organise Your Garage

Having an organised garage is something that many people aspire to but most never achieve. Maybe your garage is full of boxes or has become a dumping ground for unused household items. If you can’t park your car inside your garage, then read on, this blog post is for you.

To get you onto the right track, start by putting a system in place so that the process of organisation is easy to maintain. By following a constructive system, you’ll open more space and be able to use your garage for its intended purpose.

Here are five tips to help you organise your garage:

1. Start afresh

Where possible, start by taking everything out of the garage as this will allow you to best reorganise your items. The beauty of starting afresh is that you can decide what you no longer need and visualise what should go where. Also you can use this opportunity to clean the space.

2. Declutter

Once you’ve taken everything out, create three piles – keeping, donating and discarding. Decide what stays and what goes (don’t keep something just for the sake it and rather give your clutter a second chance, but with someone else). If you’re indecisive, consider renting a self storage unit to out the items into.

3. Categorise your items

The best way to organise your garage is to group items into categories so you know exactly where to find what. It’s important to stay disciplined in keeping to this system – make sure to put things back in their designated space. Make use of storage bins or strong boxes that stack easily and label each one.

4. Utilise wall space

Wall space is often overlooked. Make the space on your walls usable and accessible by purchasing open shelves and using them to store various items. An example of going the vertical route would be to hang your lawn mower on the wall if you have the space for it.

If you are storing bicycles, do it properly. Make use of bike hooks or racks that are drilled into the wall. Bicycles can be expensive and should be looked after properly - you don’t want scratches, cracked frames or broken spokes.

5. Invest in self storage
