Six Simple Packing Tips For Moving Home

If you are planning a move, you’ve probably considered your various options so as to make the transition as smooth as possible. Let’s be honest, it can be a daunting task if you consider the logistics, the packing and stress that comes with moving home.

How you pack your household items can be the difference between a smooth move and a stressful one. To make things a bit easier for you, here are our six packing tips.

  1. Pack up one room at a time

Don’t try to attempt packing up the entire home at once. Delegate each family member to pack up as much of their own room as possible. This way, the process of packing up a single room at a time is more controllable and it makes unpacking much simpler with items being together.

  1. Declutter

Declutter, declutter, declutter! While you don’t need to go all Marie Kondo on your family, use the move as the opportunity to decide what you really need and what you don’t. Consider selling, donating or storing the items you don’t currently need, offsite. There is no need to move clutter from one home to the other – this is your chance to start off fresh.

  1. Label each box

It’s essential to label each box and sort them into their respective categories – kitchen, dining room and so on - and know exactly what each box contains. Colour-coding is another tool that can be used to save you a lot of time. Using these organisational tools will help you find what you need in no time. Draw up an inventory list with all the categories and their respective colours.

  1. Pack a box for first day essentials

Pack a box of essentials that you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home. Rather transport this box yourself as it won’t take up much space in your vehicle. This box should include items such as toiletries, clothing, plates, eating utensils and some food. If moving with your family, make sure that each family member has a box.

  1. Don’t take shortcuts when packing fragile items

Take extra precaution when packing breakables. A simple and affordable way to do this is by making use of clothes, towels and linen for padding, especially for the bigger items such as your TVs, fridges, microwaves etc. All plates, bowls and glasses need to be individually wrapped in newspaper or bubble wrap. At Storage King, we sell a variety of packaging materials to best protect your fragile items.

  1. Make use of self storage
