How to store your winter sports items

Posted: 16 March 2021

Storing Winter Sport Items

Winter is slowly being replaced by the fresh, spring air and promise of summer around the corner. The snow is melting and many people have started packing away their jumpers. As you prepare your home for the start of the new season, you may find that your winter sports gear is taking up a lot of space.

Here are a few tips on how to store your winter sports items so that they don’t clutter the home but are stored safely and securely, ready to be enjoyed next winter.

Dry and clean your gear

Whether your winter sport of choice is skiing, ice skating or ice hockey, the same suggestion applies across the board. Rinse off all of your gear so that there’s no snow, dust or dirt on the equipment. Once each piece is clean, you should dry them off properly so that there’s no moisture that can become mould.

Store out of direct sunlight

Even in a cold city, the sun’s UV rays can be harmful and cause damage. Make sure that you store your equipment out of direct sunlight to avoid them getting faded and brittle.

Get racks if needed

Shelving and storage racks can be very useful in sorting your winter sports equipment and making sure that it is protected. If you have an array of items, then you can get specific shelving for your snowshoes, hockey sticks and skates. Quality equipment can cost a pretty penny, so it’s important to store them properly.

Use storage bins

Storage bins are useful for storing groups of items together. For example, you can keep your skiing goggles, helmet and jacket all in one place, making it easy to find them when you next need them. You can take it one step further and label each box for clarification. Just make sure that all of your equipment and gear is properly cleaned and dried beforehand.

Avoid pressure on certain equipment

Certain winter sports equipment will come with special storage instructions. For example, snowboards should be cleaned properly, waxed with a storage or travel wax, and make sure that no other items are placed on top of the boards.

These are just a few useful suggestions to keep in mind when packing your winter sports equipment away. If you find that your winter gear is taking up space in your home, then you can rent a safe and secure self storage unit. Storage King has a variety of different size units, available across the UK.
