How To Safely Store A Piano In A Self Storage Unit

The piano was the centre of many homes for generations, and while its status may be declining, the mere presence of this instrument still adds character to a room. However, there may come a time when that piano needs to be moved.

Whether it’s because you’re moving homes, renovating or downsizing, moving a piano requires a lot of care.

Pianos are expensive and can be seen as investment, especially antique ones. Protecting and preparing your piano when putting it into self storage is important as heat, humidity and dirt can cause damage.

Before you store your piano, clean it with a damp cloth and polish the outer surfaces. Wipe down the keys and keep out the dust by placing a cloth over the keys before closing the lid. It may sound strange but placing a nylon bag of chewing tobacco inside the piano will help prevent any moisture damage. You are now ready to put it into storage!

How to safely store your piano in your self storage unit

  • First, find the right storage unit size bearing in mind that you may also want to store other items. At Storage King, we have a variety of different storage unit sizes for you to choose from.
  • Put a rug or carpet on the floor of the unit and always store a piano on its feet.
  • Organise that a professional mover help with transporting the piano as they are extremely heavy. They will have the necessary equipment to move it and you won’t have to worry about putting your back out!
  • Finally, cover the piano with a cotton sheet or piece of plastic to give it that extra layer of protection from dust.
