How to prep your patio furniture for storage

Whether you are moving house, getting ready for a renovation, or just planning ahead for winter, there are a couple of things to keep in mind before storing outdoor furniture to ensure each piece comes out of storage looking just as good as when it went in. From couches and cushions to outside tables, we cover how to prep your patio furniture for storage.

Outside couches and cushions

Wash and dry all cushions to remove stains and foodstuffs, and give the frame a thorough wipe down with material-specific products to seal it. Before wrapping cushions in fabric covers or vacuum-sealing them, ensure that each one is 100% dry to avoid mould and mildew.

Outside tables

After cleaning the table of dirt or packed dust, ensure the table edges are padded to avoid damaging any other items within the unit or the table itself. If possible, disassemble the table to make transport and storage easier. Lay the tabletop flat on the covered ground, wrap the table legs in bubble wrap, and tape the screws and bolts to the tabletop in a plastic bag.

Grill storage

Although you can store a grill in a personal self storage unit, propane tanks and other flammable materials will have to be disconnected and kept out of the unit for safety. Ensure a proper clean of your grill to remove all dirt and grime, and cover the item with a tarp or old linen for an extra layer of protection.

Patio umbrellas

Start by clearing out any leaves, twigs and dirt that may have settled in. After a proper clean and wipe down, ensure you lubricate all joints and locks before wrapping the umbrella in a tarp, large furniture cover, or old linens. You can add a final layer of bubble wrap for extra protection.

Outside rugs and carpets

Clean the rug or carpet thoroughly to remove all dirt, debris, and stains before storing. Once dry, tightly roll it up to prevent creases and wrinkles. Lastly, wrap the rug or carpet in a heavy-duty tarp or plastic sheet to protect against dust and moisture.
