What better way to start off the new year than by decluttering your home and creating a clean, fresh space to enjoy. With lockdown restrictions limiting our movements and leading us to spend more time at home, it’s important to create a space that is productive and clutter-free.

By following these handy tips you’ll realise that you have less to clean, your space is more organised and your mood significantly lighter.

Break up your tasks into bite-size chunks

At first, decluttering your home may seem like a huge task to tackle, especially considering that the room usually looks worse before it begins to look better. Don’t be intimidated though!

Instead, create a decluttering checklist and break up your day into manageable chunks of time, whether that be an hour, 30 minutes or even 15-minute slots.

Get everyone involved

With the whole family spending entire days at home, you can rope in your children and partner to help declutter. You can gamify the experience and set targets for teams. It may not be a day at the park, but it’s a bonding experience none-the-less and will become what you make of it.

Decide what items to keep, donate and store

Draw up criteria to help you to decide which items you want to keep, donate and store away. These guidelines will be your go-to checklist when deciding what to do with your belongings and it will help you make smart decisions to avoid clutter.

Wear comfortable clothes

This may seem like an obscure tip, but it’s a very useful one. Wear a comfortable T-shirt and a pair of trousers that won’t restrict your movement. You’ll be grateful for the comfort when you’re reaching into cupboards and moving plastic bags around the home.

Target room-by-room

To avoid having a home that is half-decluttered, it’s a good idea to work through the house room-by-room. This will give you a sense of achievement as you finish off the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms while making sure that only one section of your home is messy at any given point.

As you declutter you’ll realise that there are certain items that you’re not willing to part with but there is no space in the home. These may be seasonal items such as sporting equipment or sentimental objects that have been moved aside to make space for a home office.
