So far, 2020 has been a year of unpredictability and change. While a lot of these changes have been forced, many people across the UK are taking the opportunity to change career paths or move to new positions in other companies. Changing careers or the company you work for is not quite the same as what it used to be, with the more traditional interview process shifting somewhat.
If you are looking to move on to new opportunities, here are a few tips to help you along.
LinkedIn is the perfect platform to help you connect with colleagues, alumni and other people in your industry. If you are on the lookout for new opportunities that are coming available, a handy tip is to create a job alert so that you get notified of any positions matching your profile. Be sure to complete your profile so that it is an accurate and professional depiction of who you are. Being active on LinkedIn will allow you to keep up with any new job openings that become available and it also allows recruiters to find you. Having a complete and updated profile will also stand you in good stead as many HR teams will check your LinkedIn profile during the selection process.
- Prepare
When you are selected for an interview, there are a few things you'll need to prepare for. First of all, know as much about the company as you possibly can - do a bit of research to find out exactly what they’re all about and take note of anything you would like to ask them. With most interviews taking place online now, you'll need to make an effort to ensure you have a professional background and see that you have the right lighting. Although you need to consider a professional background, the reality is that you will most likely still be at home so don't be too shy in getting some of your personality across with the type of books you have in the background, decor etc. Just make sure the space doesn't look cluttered as this won't come across well. These small efforts can really pay off.
- During the interview
This is your moment, so be sure to make the most of it. Choose an outfit that is professional and speaks to the industry that you are in, and take note the background tips above. While answering questions be concise, confident and don't veer off-topic. Try to let some of your personality show as well, so don't be too stiff in how you respond.
While you are preparing yourself and the space around you for that important interview, why not use the opportunity to declutter your living and working space. If you have some items you just can't get rid of, self storage is the perfect solution. We'll take care of your items for when you need them again.
