It’s estimated that over five million tonnes of plastic is used in the UK each year. From grocery bags to toothbrushes, plastic waste continues to stream into the natural environment at an unprecedented rate, causing irrevocable damage. Determined to put an end to this silent enemy, Stephen Griffiths founded OccaStore Limited and began offering people eco-friendly alternatives to everyday products.
Today, the online retail company is paving the way to a plastic-free future, one eco-friendly product at a time. Whether you need reusable beauty items or natural kitchen necessities, the team at OccaStore Limited stocks a wide range of products to make eco decisions that much easier. By putting the planet first, Stephen has built a business that benefits the planet. Here’s how he did it:
1. Be persistent
Starting your own business is tough, and it’s even tougher when that business sells reusable goods. While these items are still stigmatised in society, it’s important to remain resolute in your mission and educate people on the countless benefits these products have.
2. Be patient and open-minded
Reusable products are still a relatively new concept so it’s crucial that you allow your customers time to adjust to these changes while also being open to suggestions. I constantly ask for feedback from customers and incorporate them into the design, new products or general ongoing development of products.
3. Raise awareness
Create a brand that clearly shows the benefits of sustainable consumerism and why it’s important as a consumer to support such a business. This will not only grow your customer base but promote a more sustainable way of life.
4. Give back
No company can exist in isolation, it relies on communities to survive and thrive. Therefore, it’s important to always give back in any way you can. For example, I intend to give three local schools free reusable sanitary products so that youth have access to these basic needs while also learning about the benefits of these products.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Find companies and people to help you grow without burning out. Delegation and trust have allowed the company to grow whilst I continue to work full time.
