Top household items prone to damage during a move

When moving, it's important to take inventory of everything you're packing to better prepare for potential damage. From oddly-shaped furniture to artwork, there are a number of items that are prone to damage during a move.

While hiring removals experts like our recent Local Business Spotlight feature, Tee's Removals, is a great way to ensure all items arrive in one piece, a little bit of prep on your part can go a long way. Here are the most common household items that tend to get damaged during a move.

Glass and dishware

Glassware and dinner sets scream fragile. If you’ve ever relied on old newspapers to wrap your fragile items only to find a boxful of crushed glass, you’ll know why wrapping paper and bubble wrap are essential. It’s better to wrap twice rather than buy twice.

Bulky furniture

From a solid oak dining table to an antique armoire, oddly-shaped or bulky furniture are among the first to suffer damage. Items like fridges, pianos and grandfather clocks are also prone to damage due to having several moving parts. Keep them covered and invest in a dolly and moving van with straps to secure them in place.

Artwork

Artwork - whether a large canvas or a small statue - is one of the few items when doubling up on packaging materials is a must. Only use plain wrapping paper, bubble wrap or fabric covers to wrap any artwork and invest in storage crates and foam peanuts to prevent movement during transit.

Picture frames and mirrors

The glass and frame can be easily damaged if not properly prepped. Place strips of tape in the shape of an X and a plus sign to secure the glass in place, lay a cardboard sheet over glass sections and secure it with cling wrap before carefully wrapping the entire piece in bubble wrap. Don't forget to fill the box with linens, bubble wrap or foam peanuts to prevent movement.

Electronics

Electronics are often delicate and have multiple components that can be easily damaged when jostled or experience sudden temperature changes. Additionally, electronics often have a lot of small parts that can be easily lost or broken during a move, so take extra care when packing to keep all pieces together.
