Tips to manage stress while working from home

Posted: 20 October 2020

Work From Home Opt

With the three tiers of Coronavirus risk being implemented across the UK, working from home has once again become a reality for so many more of us. While there are many benefits to working from home, ensuring social distancing being one of them, it can at times be difficult to manage your time and continue being productive with the distractions of home life. Much of this can lead to an increased stressful working environment, especially with the prospect of kids rushing into a room while you're in a meeting!

Here are a few tips to help you manage your stress more effectively while you deal with the increased pressure of working from home.

Tips for managing stress while working from home

  • Take back control

When you’re stressed things can very easily begin to spiral out of control. This is because we aren’t focused on one thing at a time and instead our mind becomes a haze of everything that needs to be done. If you get into this space, take a deep breath and really evaluate what it is that is stressing you out. Write down the tasks ahead of you and then create a priority list of when things need to be completed by. This will help you to get perspective of what is important and what you still have time to complete. Tick off the easy wins first!

  • Manage your work and schedule

While working from home, it can become difficult to balance when you are working at home or going about your daily home life with your family. You can lose track of time and work through lunch breaks or after hours with the divide between home and work being minimal. Be strict with setting boundaries of when to switch off and when to get back to work. Try to replicate your usual work day as much as possible, in terms of the schedule.

  • Take care of yourself

It's important to take care of your mental and physical well-being during times of stress. Be sure that you are getting enough time to fully relax and stick to the normal downtime that you would have set aside during standard office hours. Develop an exercise regime (you'll have more time not having to travel in and out of the office/workplace) and make sure that you are getting enough sleep. If you are physically and mentally taken care of, it means that you will be fully present and focused on the daily tasks ahead of you.
