Changing your career can be a daunting task. It means giving up the career stability you have built over time and walking away from the comfort of the familiar. However, changing your career path can also be an exciting opportunity to break out of a work rut, push yourself and move beyond your comfort zone. To help you make a choice you won’t regret, we look at the dos and don’ts of changing your career.

You should:

Figure out what you want to do

What do you really want to do? What motivated this career change? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself. Knowing where your strengths and weaknesses lie will also assist in making this decision. So, think wisely, and make sure your choice is worth the massive change you’re about to endure.

Find out what the work is like

Now it’s time to research your new passion. Find people who are working in the profession of your choice and have a chat with them. You might even be able to shadow them on the job. Reading about the possibilities of a new career and actively living it can sometimes be two very different experiences. It’s not the worst idea to cautiously dip a toe in the water before diving in.

You shouldn’t:

Burn Bridges

You may be 100% invested in your decision to leave your current company to pursue other avenues, but this needs to be done in a considerate and polite manner. The world may seem like a large and wonderful place, but it's still small enough for that burnt bridge to catch up with you, lighting fire to your newly made plans.

Expect to start, where you left off

Be prepared to establish yourself within a new company all over again. If you have been in your current position for a long time, you might have taken for granted the privileges you acquired while working there. Shifting gears may force you to take a back seat to those who have already established their careers at your new place of work.
