As part of a series of programmes by the BBC, focussing on businesses that have done well despite the recent recession, they took a closer look at Self Storage in the UK.
Less than 40 years ago, the idea of storing your items anywhere other than in your house, garage or garden shed was almost unheard of - yet today, the UK has more storage facilities available than the rest of Europe put together.
And it's not just your normal, everyday bits and pieces that can be found in the storage units - the BBC programme meets some of the storage customers from around the country - along with their more weird and wonderful items. Be sure to look out for Dave Bailey and his to-scale collections of sci-fi figures!
If you want to know more about the history of self-storage in the UK, such as where the idea for safe, secure storage units came from, then the BBC has also released an article on the history behind our industry. With people in the UK now owning up to 6 times more 'things' than the generation before them - and with houses shrinking size every decade, having a self-storage unit nearby can be a massive help for many people.
You can find the episode on BBC iPlayer here or alternatively, it's on BBC 2 this evening at 23.20. And if you're looking for storage yourself, make sure to get in touch with us or get a free quote on our site.
