1. Have the dress cleaned immediately
A wedding dress is made with delicate materials and in order to best preserve it, should be dry-cleaned as soon as possible. Any stains or marks on the fabric need to be washed out before they have had the time to set in. Make sure to find someone who specialises in cleaning wedding dresses and remind them to pay close attention to the instructions on the label of the dress.
2. Use the correct packing materials
When packing your dress away for storage, you need to make sure it will remain in top condition. It’s extremely important to make sure that all packing materials are acid-free. Avoid storing your dress in a plastic bag or even the bag it comes in, and rather make use of a professional wedding preservation box. Fold the dress loosely to avoid any creasing and layer the dress with white tissue paper between every fold.
3. Storing your wedding dress
Once the wedding dress has been properly cleaned and packed, it’s time to store it. Protect your dress from direct sunlight to prevent the fabric from fading and turning yellow. Make sure the location where you are storing the dress is cool in temperature with dry air – you don’t want any moisture. Check up on your dress every six months and repackage it with new tissue paper to prevent any permanent creases.
