How to make your living room feel cosier

Posted: 26 January 2021

cosy home in winter

During the winter months, there is nothing better than relaxing in a warm and cosy home, especially if you are sitting in front of the fireplace. Lockdown restrictions mean that a lot more time is being spent at home and the cosy atmosphere can quickly be replaced by a cluttered mess.

Here are a few tips on how to make your living room cosy and comfortable, ranging from big adjustments to quick and easy fixes.

Insulate the room

When doors and windows aren’t sealed properly, cold air will quickly make its way into your home.  Make sure that all openings are properly insulated so that the indoor warmth doesn’t escape.

If you have a fireplace, make sure that the warm air stays indoors without letting smoke inside.

Declutter the mess

You may be surprised by how quickly unnecessary mess can take up valuable space, especially when the room is being used often. Declutter the living room and decide what items to donate, put in storage and throw out. When there’s less mess, the room will feel more spacious and comfortable.

Introduce warm colours

Include warm colours in your upholstery and accent items. Red, orange, yellow and other rich shades can add warmth to a room and make it feel cosier. You can introduce these colours through scatter cushions and a new rug, or you can even paint one of your walls (which will also make the room feel smaller and more intimate, if that is what you are going for).

Use a fragrance

The feeling of being cosy is a multi-sensory experience. Adding a rich and warm fragrance such as frankincense and amber can introduce a comforting scent into the room. Some ways to do this include burning incense or getting an oil burner.

Add throw blankets and cushion

Few moments are as cosy as cuddling up on the sofa with a soft blanket and hot chocolate. Invest in additional throw blankets and cushions to add a comforting warmth to the room. This is also a great way to include warm colours!

These are just a few ways to make your living room cosier this winter. Some of these tips also give you an opportunity to express your creativity and declutter your home.
