The 2019 boat race has come and gone and once again Cambridge were victorious. The winning time was 16:57 with a winning distance of only 1 length, which shows how close it really was.
When the race began both crews got away cleanly, moving quickly as they flew past Putney Embankment. Cambridge then began to creep away from their rivals until Oxford came from several lengths down at St Paul’s Boathouse to push them to just under a length as they crossed the finish line.
Of course, Storage King Cambridge were elated with the result. We asked our Cambridge store manager Carol Jacklin what she thought of how the race played out. “Both crews are normally well-matched but this year I felt Cambridge would have the edge with James Craknell on board. He has recently enrolled at Darwin college on a course of Human Evolution so was eligible to enter.’’
When we asked Carol if a similar rivalry exists between our self storage store in Cambridge and in Oxford, she didn’t give away much. ‘’I don’t think that the same rivalry exists between Oxford and Cambridge in Storage King albeit we do joke about it sometimes. Healthy competition is always a good thing though!’’
A few fun facts about the famous Boat Race:
• The very first Boat Race was in 1829 however it only became an annual event in 1856
• The race came about because of a challenge between two friends from Harrow School - Charles Wordsworth and Charles Merrivale
• Founded in 1927 but only raced intermittently until the mid-1960’s, the first women's race was held on the Isis in Oxford
• Cambridge currently lead the total series of wins 84 – 80 (and this year they won both the men’s and women’s)
