Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a Manager for Storage King? Our series "A Day In The Life" tells the story from the point of view of the men and women on the front lines every day. This week we get insight from Jose Suarez, manager of Storage King Gloucester, on his average day on the job.
Working for the storage industry for more than 20 years has been eventful. I suppose the reason why I am still doing what I am doing is because of our customers.
My day starts with a short drive to work (it used to be an 80 mile round trip before I decided to show commitment to my position and relocated from Bristol). When I arrive, I make myself a cup of coffee and a walk around the building to ensure that everything is as it should be, from clean and clear corridors to locks on all the storerooms. I also check that the lights are all operational, and that fire extinguishers and fire exit doors are where and how they should be. This to me is one of the most important procedures, because when I sell the facility to potential customers I like to say that it is “more like a hotel for your goods rather than somewhere to just to dump your stuff”, so it is important that we present a professional and safe service.
I then start my computer and attend to enquiries received overnight. I like to get straight on the phone to any new enquires, as I’m a strong believer in the old saying the “early bird catches the worm” and it always gives you the edge if you’re the first to make contact.
What drives me the most is getting that £20 reservation knowing that the customer has committed to using Storage King over one of our competitors. Although there are many reasons why they should choose us over our competitors, I still get a buzz even after two decades of working in storage. I am also driven by other aspects of the business such as hitting targets and looking after my customers’ needs and requirements.
Next on the list is to follow up with people I have not yet been able to reach, and I often have to mix it up a bit with texts, emails and calls. Once I reach a potential customer, it is all about using my knowledge and the store’s unique selling points to see how we can help them.
After a quick lunch break which normally consists of a sarnie and an energy drink to keep me going, it’s on to the daily tasks such as dealing with customer queries, answering various questions about self storage and on certain days completing lock checks, stock takes and carrying out Health and Safety procedures. All of these things are very important in keeping my store shipshape and Bristol fashion.
Occasionally when things are quiet, I visit local companies to offer our shredding services which has become very popular over the last couple of years.
The best part of any day for me is counting the number of reservations made and the number of move in’s completed, knowing that I have put in every effort to helping new customers.
After a quick walk around the building to make sure everything is as it should be, I check that all the daily takings are correct before shutting down from another productive day at Storage King Gloucester.
Over the last 20 years I have worked for several different storage companies around the country, but feel the most settled in Gloucester working for Storage King. The reason for this is due to how the communication works within the business - being able to pick up the phone and call my Regional Manager, Operation Director or even my CEO to discuss something without feeling it’s too much trouble. I feel like we are one big happy family who have each other’s backs no matter which store we are running. We often brainstorm ideas which Storage King is happy to implement if it will move us in the right direction and achieve our ultimate goal of being the number one storage company in the United Kingdom.
