Ever wondered what it would be like to be a Manager for Storage King, making self storage simple? Our series "a day in the life" tells the story from the point of view of the men and women on the front lines every day. This week we chat to Dan Baker, Manager at Storage King in Woodley-Reading.
My day usually starts around 6am, with two young children who have no idea what a “lay in” is, then depending on my shift I either leave around 7am to drive to work or drop them off at our local school.
I tend to get to the store around 8am, so I can conduct a walk-round to make sure everything is in order. Then at 8:30 it’s all guns blazing, dealing with any new enquiries and calling all scheduled enquiries to see if they need any further assistance with their move. Our enquiries are not a task to me, but an opportunity, and when we reach the customer I know I must use all of my experience and training to assist them accordingly.
One of the best parts of my role is knowing I have made an impact on someone, not all storage enquiries are due to a pleasant reason, therefore showing an understanding human side is paramount to any customer relationship. It’s great when I know that someone has left the office with a smile on their face, (and of course a new contract in their hands).
Every day I make sure both my colleague and I leave the office to take a lunch break in our staff room, the helps us to re-energise and re-focus. (Coffee and doughnuts also help).
After all of the urgent calls and follow ups are done, we would normally concentrate on tasks such as cleaning and maintenance, but also looking for any opportunities we may have via local marketing. When we close I make sure there is nothing outstanding as when I leave for the day. I have a nice clear mind ready for the next day.
I have to say I genuinely love working at Storage King, you just never know what is going to happen next, one day it might just be someone who buys a roll of tape but will chat all day if they could. Next day it’s a famous rock star who needs 1,500sqft for his clothing range!
