10 ways to maximise your small balcony space

Balcony 2

With the weather warming up, it’s time to finally give your balcony the makeover it so desperately deserves. Even though you might not have a large outdoor space, with a little bit of ingenuity and some elbow grease, you can transform your tiny balcony into a beautiful space you will want to spend time in. Here’s how:

1. Add some seating

To create the ideal outdoor space, you need comfy seating. If you’re on a budget, get creative and upcycle a pre-owned table or craft your own with an old wooden pallet. If you have some big cushions lying around, use them as seating and create a cosy, intimate space at no extra cost.

2. Bring in the greenery

Plants are an easy and cost-effective way to liven up a dull space. If the area is small and you can’t arrange some colourful pots on the floor, opt for a few hanging pots with creepers to create a wall of greenery. Perennial flowers are also a great way to bring colour to space and make it smell fresh all year round.

3. Use your wall space

By making use of your walls, you can add a lot of character to a seemingly small space. From mosaics and wall murals to hanging shelves and dartboards, there are countless ways you can spruce up your balcony space.

4. Add some colour

Many balconies don’t have shape and require a touch of colour to bring them to life. If you aren’t very creative, simply stencil a fun, geometric shape and fill it in with your favourite colour. If you can’t make any permanent changes, colourful flowers, pillows and pots will also do the trick.

5. Set the mood

Good lighting is key if you want to create a calm and relaxing space. String some fairy lights on the roof of your balcony or if you don't have one, arrange a few lanterns around the area to set the mood.

6. Hang a hammock

While you might be in the middle of the city, a hammock can make you feel like you’re on a private island in the Mediterranean. Simply secure two hooks on either side of your balcony and put your feet up after a hard day.

7. Create some privacy

If you’re living in an apartment, then privacy is a continuous struggle. Create a natural barrier between your neighbours with a wall of bamboo or hang a shade cloth above your balcony to avoid people looking down on you.

8. Weather-proof your space

It’s important to weather-proof your balcony so that you can enjoy it rain or shine. Put up a water-proof shade cloth or ensure that you have a large umbrella that you can bring out on a sweltering day.

9. Put down some patterns

If your balcony floor is outdated and chipped, consider putting down some laminate tile flooring. With an array of attractive patterns available, you can give your balcony a chic, Mediterranean feel.

10. Layer with cosy rugs

Rugs are also a great way to cover up an unattractive balcony floor or if you just want to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. Be sure to choose a pattern that complements the rest of your house so that it feels like one, continuous space and forget to bring it in on rainy days!
