Just before Christmas Day, lucky members of Amazon Prime witnessed something that has never been seen before: A Grand Tour of the Luton-Dunstable Storage King. Richard Hammond and James May were out in full force in Houghton Hall Business Park, hosting an extremely competitive race around the site.
The Grand Tour (if you didn’t know) is a motoring television series exclusive to Amazon Prime members, presented by Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May. In its second season, we see the trio travelling the globe, experimenting with various cars in incredible places, and attempting ludicrous, but very comical activities.
In Episode 3, their ‘Grand Tour’ took them to sunny Dunstable and saw Storage King race against their neighbours: I.T. company CURA Technical. The race saw the drivers dodge roundabouts, office chairs and dustbins in a controlled and safe route set around the business park. With Hammond commentating from the security pod (using the park’s excellent CCTV facilities to watch the race) and May timekeeping, the audience were wowed by the skills of the drivers. In particular, they were amused by the CURA driver who hurtled into a row of bins, creating a flourish of rubbish that was thrown all over Houghton Hall!
The Grand Finale Showdown Shootout saw Gav from Storage King in the Seat Leon Cupra R and Steve from CURA in the BMW M3, battle it out in a head-to-head race. It was tense. Gav overtook Steve just after ‘smokers corner’ and remained in front until just before ‘mountain’s plastics’, where the BMW scraped into the lead. In potentially the closest race The Grand Tour has ever seen, unfortunately CURA Technical took the trophy.
In what was an exciting and competitive lunch-hour, Storage King Luton-Dunstable hasn’t quite been the same since. And neither have the cars. We’d like to thank The Grand Tour for hosting this great event and we welcome them back any time.
