Tips to improve your working from home environment

02 August Work From Home Blog (1)

One the biggest changes that most people across the UK have had to adapt to over recent months is a working from home environment. The sudden change brought about by COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown meant a new way of working.

While this has become a new normal for so many of us, it is still an adjustment. In this blog post we share a few tips to help improve your working-from-home environment.

Tips to improve your working from home environment

  • The early bird catches the worm

One of the biggest advantages when it comes to working from home is that you don’t need to commute. That can also mean a bit of a shift in what time you wake up, which is not always a good thing. Don’t get into a habit of sleeping in – get ahead of the day and get any distractions done before getting into work mode. You could also use that gap for a bit of ‘me time’, whether that be a coffee on the couch or even a bit of morning yoga.

  • Expectations

With the change of working environment, make sure you have a clear understanding of what the expectations are from your line manager and colleagues. Find a system that works for you to keep on top of things. This could be a journal, white board, calendar- whatever helps you be productive. There are also plenty of online workflow tools to help you along.

  • Defined work space

Make sure you have a defined work space and that you don’t simply work from the couch or from your bed (big no-no!). Take the opportunity to set up your own office space and one which reflects your personality so that you feel comfortable and able to be the most productive possible. If you need to clear out a room or an area in your home, why not place the items into self storage for when you need them again.

  • Tools

Make sure you have the tools you need to get your work done. That could be multiple screens, a reliable router, quality printer etc. Earphones are a great way of blocking out distractions and focusing on the task at hand.

  • Time out

Although you need to be as productive as possible, know when to shut down and be with your family, partner or just by yourself winding down. With your work so close by, it can be easy to get lost in the workload which will lead to fatigue and possible burnout.
